Effortlessness for Over-Achievers

Wanta be more effective and get more sh#t done?  Ease up!
Take it from a veteran over-doer. I have a Master’s degree in Impatient Futile Forcing  Ever-mindful of Disappointment (aka MIFFED).  That doesn’t get you there sooner and certainly not in better shape.  The alternative…..?  Do what the experts do.
Santa Claus Taking a Break

Relax and still take all the credit! The less efforting (as in pushing the river) on our part, the more room for the flow to flow (or the elves to be their merry selves).  Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, author of the book FLOW, distinguished the state of flow as that unself-conscious state where we are in the zone of optimal experience.  I’ll have what he’s having.
For more flow and less fuss, try these:

Executive in suit sitting in leather desk chair at the beach.

1.  Tolerate ease. Make friends with it.  It’s not an insult to your intelligence and capacity, nor does it put the world at risk.   You may need to sneak up on this one as your MIFFED credentials will clamor for a timecard full of overtime.  Who would you be if you weren’t defined by effort and achievement?

2.  Tap into the present moment and let yourself be informed.
Present moment awareness provides us with the focus of all our energy on life in the now – which happens to be the only moment there is.  Hit the Pause button, breathe, and get perspective.   You don’t even have to ponder a question, just let your busy full-of-opinion mind rest so you become available to what is.

3.  Interrupt a pattern that keeps you trapped. Like one that is so automatic, it gets to run the show without your permission.  In order to see it, you may need to step back and watch it in action.  Once you see it, you can reassign its power so that it becomes a source of entertainment or a reminder to take a break or a reason to just throw your head back and laugh out loud at its demand for self-importance.  And you don’t have to tell a soul what you’re doing.

We’re in the season of fixation, expectation, and attachment which also makes it the season of dispute, disappointment, and despair. Stay awake, find the flow, breathe. Stay open to who you may encounter when you are in the present moment.  As the poet Hafiz says, “The Beloved will send you wonderful and wild companions!”

STILL WAITING?
Life is too short to wear tight shoes.  Or to be trapped by restricting attitudes or beliefs.  Or to wait for conditions to change so you can finally live your life to the fullest.

If you aren’t using words like ”wonderful, rich, meaningful, fulfilling, purposeful, blessed, happy, juicy” to describe your life, then – by golly – you are settling.  Please stop.

And plug back in to the natural flow of life where you have access to your greatest effectiveness and fulfillment.  Turns out I know just the thing that can help with that so am unabashedly inviting you to participate in my Embodied Abundance telecourse.  It has proven itself over and over to free people from limits while supplying the very elements for an embodied (not just conceptualized) life of greater meaning and ease.

If struggling was the way to get there,
we’d all be there by now….

The tele-course runs Wed, Sept 29th through Nov 24th.
8 conference calls plus 1/2 hour coaching session with me. All calls are recorded so you can miss the live calls and still fully participate.  No commute, no wardrobe required, just your appetite and willingness.  Click for full details and to register.

Exactly what are you waiting for?

PRACTICE OF THE MONTH
Observe when you say Yes and when you say No.  Are you choosing or is it just habit?
Our lives are the result of what we do automatically.  If you’re not liking the results you’re producing, choose again.
Here’s the big secret: we make it all up.   So make up what best serves your purposes.

March 2010 Newsletter: Typhoid Merry

TYPHOID MERRY

Now just stay with me a minute, this is a good thing – thus the oh so clever play on words. Given the power of contagion with germs, rumors, and fear, why not use it for the good stuff?
The National Academy of Sciences recently reported “the first laboratory evidence that cooperative behavior is contagious and that it spreads from person to person to person. When people benefit from kindness they ‘pay it forward” by helping others who were not originally involved, and this creates a cascade of cooperation.”
There, see, just when we thought there was no hope for us humans, there we go being nice to each other.  And not because someone told us to but because it’s a natural response.

contagion

While you still want to have fresh breath when you go out to be contagious, you have more power than you may have realized.  Has it ever happened to you – a stranger does something nice like hold the door open for you, let you in front of them in traffic, or perhaps just smile at you when you walk by them?  And then what happens?  You feel so good you can’t help yourself from doing something nice for the next person you encounter.  And then they do the same thing.  And then and then.  Who knows how many more get infected by this joy epidemic!
The key here is that you must make yourself available to receive those kind acts, or they just go to waste.  Forget what your mother said, expose yourself as often as possible!  Then pass it on from that sense of fullness and connection.  It’s one of the most enlivening actions you can take. Feel free to just spiral right out of control.

PRACTCE OF THE MONTH

Remember the days of Random Acts of Kindness when we got to sneak around and do good things for others?  Well, let’s bring it back.
Find a way everyday to practice a little Necessary Mischief:  trade the mundane for the sublime.  Sneeze joy, fun, laughter, and love all over those around you.  And you don’t even have to admit that it makes you feel good too.
That’s the great thing about being contagious, you can impact others without reducing your share.  Typhoid Merry would be so proud.

WHY RECESS MATTERS
School kids do it, Congress does it, even plants during winter snows do it.  (If you know the tune, please sing along.)  Fact is, taking recess is an occurrence in both the natural and the human-made world.  It is us adult bi-ped’s who are not very reliable for knowing when to take one.
Every week I send out an Audio Recess for the sake of you taking a break right in the midst of all the demands in your life.  I trust you’ve figured out how to listen to it and still look terribly busy.  Because as we all know… if we’re busy, we’re productive.
Oh contraire!  If we’re chronically busy, it’s likely we are operating not at peak performance but more at “numb speed”.  That’s my term for “head down, pushing through, and taking self way too seriously”.  I’m hoping it will find its way into the general lexicon.
Who has time for recess!  Atheletes, artists, musicians, builders, writers, leaders, cooks, teachers, physicians, coaches, farmers, creators – they all know the role of taking a break, giving something time to come to form, letting things rest, getting perspective, clearing their heads or resting their bodies.
We’re hyped up and melting down.  The source of most disease is stress (yep, there’s plenty of science to support that).  So the game is not go faster and manage your time better – by cramming more in,  but to manage your energy.
Taking a recess (even a 2-minute one) gives us a chance to hit the reset button – interrupt the overdrive and downshift into the best gear for the grade we’re traveling on.
Albert Einstein, when working on solving a problem, would take a break and go play the piano.  He was known to often exclaim “I found it” while at the keyboard – away from working the problem.
When we take a break, we are releasing ourselves from the limits of our habitual thinking and seeing, and plugging in to the All-ness of the Is-ness of the Now-ness of the Whole-ness a.k.a. a greater intelligence than just us.  And we can still take all the credit.
Since your second grade teacher isn’t around to announce Recess, it’s up to you.  What power you have.
The highest performing atheletes (the Winter Olympics are happening right now in Vancouver, BC) are masters at tuning into themselves before their capacity diminishes and restoring themselves so they can perform at their best.  Recess is a part of their greatness.  Ours too.
Listen to the Audio Recess below for more on this subject.
You can count it as one of your breaks today.
PRACTICE OF THE MONTH
Step back – enough to get perspective, fresh air, and your sense of humor in case you misplaced it.  The more flexible, the more creative.  Give yourself a break – alone or with others.  But not just once a week or a month, but daily – maybe several times a day.
Track your productivity and mood for a week when you don’t ever stop and compare it to a week when you do.
Don’t make someone else have to send you on a Time Out.

GREAT WAYS TO PRACTICE
The next  Embodied Abundance tele-course begins March 31st (last one until fall).  It’s all about living in flow – that’s timing at its best.  And there’s no commute time. It doesn’t get easier than this.

January 2010 Newsletter: The Slippery Art of Timing

Necessary Mischief Newsletter
JANUARY 2010

The Slippery Art of TIMING

Embodied Abundance Timing is a frighteningly powerful feat, producing everything from divine to disastrous results.  And it’s critical to almost everything we do:  merging in traffic, passing the ball, asking for a raise, cooking a meal, closing the deal, catching a plane or Ark, delivering the punch line, winning the Gold, even popping the question.
Masters of timing seem to fall into 2 main categories: (1) animals who move instinctively, and (2) we humans who have to practice, practice, practice.  It’s about more than justwhen, it’s also about how much.
Like Goldilocks, we have to learn what’s too much and what’s too little and what’s just right.  But wait, is it about being lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time or about meticulously planning every detail? Dare I ask, do we actually have any control or is it all just done with mirrors?

One thing’s for sure, there’s a big difference between Timing and Time.  Time, as in chronological time (from the Greekkhronos), is about “sequence or order of occurrence”. It offers endless opportunities to stay in line, hurry up, wait, worry, do it quick, and feel behind schedule.

machine cogs

Timing lives in a parallel universe: Kairos time which means “the right or opportune moment”. It can appear to be effortless, when actually it’s the artful application of effort (not too much, not too little).
Take the timing chain in a car, it synchronizes the sparking of the plugs with the movement of the pistons so that together they produce power.  Without it, all those parts would be moving but no power would be created.  Much like us when we rush around trying too hard and ultimately produce exhaustion rather than fruitful results.
We gain mastery in the art of timing by (drum roll, please) being present.  And we do that by dropping deeper into the moment and let our senses inform us.  With practice, we find the sweet spot.  Listen to that engine purr.

PRACTICE OF THE MONTH

Create rituals in your life as a way of jumping off the hamster wheel and fully entering the moment you are in.  Rituals differ greatly from habits, because they bring us more present and conscious rather than operating mechanically by rote.
It can be as simple as lighting a candle in gratitude, getting up from your desk every hour to go breathe fresh air (be sure to unlock the chain around your leg so you don’t trip), greeting your dear ones with full eye contact, or blessing the drivers on the road with you. It’s not the length of time, it’s the depth.
Anything that interrupts the habitual is necessary mischief.  It’s a way to reclaim and refocus your energy.  As the poet Hafiz says“Leave the familiar for a while…..make a new water-mark on your excitement and love.”

**********************

GREAT WAYS TO PRACTICE

There’s still time to join the Embodied Abundance telecourse which starts Jan 20th.  It’s all about living in flow – that’s timing at its best.  And there’s no commute time.

The Resilience Workshop on Feb 6th is for anyone who wants to be at their best under pressure.  Gee, I wonder who has pressure in their lives.

How would you like to Be an Offer They Can’t Refuse? A new tele-coaching group begins Feb 3rd for people who want to fire up their effectiveness and contribution.

And all the other good offers in the right column are just waiting to be taken advantage of, so please consider how they can serve your purposes.  Click any of the links for full details.

About our Masthead

What does a picture of the Grand Tetons have to do with Necessary Mischief?

Well, they represent ferocious aliveness, they’re inspiring, beautiful, challenging, and their geological formation was a variation of the norm.  They kind of erupted.  Who knew mountains could play
outside the box?
