<p><strong>Relax and still take all the credit!</strong> The less efforting (as in pushing the river) on our part, the more room for the flow to flow (or the elves to be their merry selves).  Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, author of the book FLOW, distinguished the state of flow as that <em>un</em>self-conscious state where we are in the zone of optimal experience.  I&#8217;ll have what he&#8217;s having.<br />
For more flow and less fuss, try these:</p>

<p>1.  <strong>Tolerate ease.</strong> Make friends with it.  It&#8217;s not an insult to your intelligence and capacity, nor does it put the world at risk.   You may need to sneak up on this one as your MIFFED credentials will clamor for a timecard full of overtime.  Who would you be if you weren&#8217;t defined by effort and achievement?</p>
<p>2.  <strong>Tap into the present moment and let yourself be informed.</strong><br />
Present moment awareness provides us with the focus of all our energy on life in the now &#8211; which happens to be the only moment there is.  Hit the Pause button, breathe, and get perspective.   You don&#8217;t even have to ponder a question, just let your busy full-of-opinion mind rest so you become available to what is.</p>
<p>3.  <strong>Interrupt a pattern that keeps you trapped.</strong> Like one that is so automatic, it gets to run the show without your permission.  In order to see it, you may need to step back and watch it in action.  Once you see it, you can reassign its power so that it becomes a source of entertainment or a reminder to take a break or a reason to just throw your head back and laugh out loud at its demand for self-importance.  And you don&#8217;t have to tell a soul what you&#8217;re doing.</p>
<p>We&#8217;re in the season of fixation, expectation, and attachment which also makes it the season of dispute, disappointment, and despair.<strong> Stay awake, find the flow, breathe.</strong> Stay open to who you may encounter when you are in the present moment.  As the poet Hafiz says, &#8220;The Beloved will send you wonderful and wild companions!&#8221;<br />

Researchers have long known that laughter boosts the immune system, lowers cholesterol and blood pressure, and reduces stress.  A new study by pyschoneuroimmunologist Lee Berk shows a shift in appetite hormones follows a case of the giggles – resemblign the effects of a moderate session at the gym.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow', 'Arial MT Condensed Light', sans-serif;"> While you still want to have fresh breath when you go out to be contagious, <span style="font-weight: bold;">you have more power than you may have realized</span>.  Has it ever happened to you &#8211; a stranger does something nice like hold the door open for you, let you in front of them in traffic, or perhaps just smile at you when you walk by them?  And then what happens?  You feel so good you can&#8217;t help yourself from doing something nice for the next person you encounter.  And then they do the same thing.  And then and then.  Who knows how many more get infected by this <span style="font-weight: bold;">joy epidemic</span>!<br />
The key here is that you must make yourself available to receive those kind acts, or they just go to waste.  Forget what your mother said, <span style="font-weight: bold;">expose yourself as often as possible</span>!  Then pass it on from that sense of fullness and connection.  It&#8217;s one of the most enlivening actions you can take. Feel free to just spiral right out of control.<br />

<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">Every week I send out an Audio Recess for the sake of you taking a break right in the midst of all the demands in your life.  I trust you&#8217;ve figured out how to listen to it and still look terribly busy.  Because as we all know&#8230; if we&#8217;re busy, we&#8217;re productive.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">Oh contraire!  If we&#8217;re chronically busy, it&#8217;s likely we are operating not at peak performance but more at &#8220;numb speed&#8221;.  That&#8217;s my term for &#8220;head down, pushing through, and taking self way too seriously&#8221;.  I&#8217;m hoping it will find its way into the general lexicon.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">Who has time for recess!  Atheletes, artists, musicians, builders, writers, leaders, cooks, teachers, physicians, coaches, farmers, creators &#8211; they all know the role of taking a break, giving something time to come to form, letting things rest, getting perspective, clearing their heads or resting their bodies.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">We&#8217;re hyped up and melting down.  The source of most disease is stress (yep, there&#8217;s plenty of science to support that).  So the game is not go faster and manage your time better &#8211; by cramming more in,  but to manage your energy.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">Taking a recess (even a 2-minute one) gives us a chance to hit the reset button &#8211; interrupt the overdrive and downshift into the best gear for the grade we&#8217;re traveling on.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">Albert Einstein, when working on solving a problem, would take a break and go play the piano.  He was known to often exclaim &#8220;I found it&#8221; while at the keyboard &#8211; away from working the problem.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">When we take a break, we are releasing ourselves from the limits of our habitual thinking and seeing, and plugging in to the All-ness of the Is-ness of the Now-ness of the Whole-ness a.k.a. a greater intelligence than just us.  And we can still take all the credit.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: small;"> Masters of timing seem to fall into 2 main categories: (1) animals who move instinctively, and (2) we humans who have to practice, practice, practice.  <span style="font-weight: bold;">It&#8217;s about more than just</span><span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">when</span><span style="font-weight: bold;">, it&#8217;s also about </span><span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">how much</span><span style="font-weight: bold;">.</span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: small;"> Like Goldilocks, we have to learn what&#8217;s too much and what&#8217;s too little and what&#8217;s just right.  But wait, is it about being lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time or about meticulously planning every detail?<span style="font-style: italic;"> Dare I ask, do we actually have</span> </span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-style: italic;">any control or is it all just done with mirrors?</span></span></div>

<p><span style="font-size: small;"> One thing&#8217;s for sure, there&#8217;s a big difference between Timing and Time.  <span style="font-weight: bold;">Time, as in chronological time (from the Greek</span><span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">khronos),</span><span style="font-weight: bold;"> is about &#8220;sequence or order of occurrence&#8221;.</span> It offers endless opportunities to stay in line, hurry up, wait, worry, do it quick, and feel behind schedule.</p>

<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Timing lives in a parallel universe: Kairos time which means &#8220;the right or opportune moment&#8221;.</span> It can appear to be effortless, when actually it&#8217;s the artful application of effort (not too much, not too little).<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> Take the timing chain in a car, it synchronizes the sparking of the plugs with the movement of the pistons so that together they produce power.  Without it, all those parts would be moving but no power would be created.  Much like us when we rush around trying too hard and ultimately produce exhaustion rather than fruitful results.</span><br />
We gain mastery in the art of timing by (drum roll, please)<span style="font-weight: bold;"> being present</span>.  And we do that by dropping deeper into the moment and let our senses inform us.  With practice, we find the sweet spot.  Listen to that engine purr.</span><br />

Create rituals in your life as a way of jumping off the hamster wheel and fully entering the moment you are in.  Rituals differ greatly from habits, because they bring us more present and conscious rather than operating mechanically by rote.<br />
It can be as simple as lighting a candle in gratitude, getting up from your desk every hour to go breathe fresh air (be sure to unlock the chain around your leg so you don&#8217;t trip), greeting your dear ones with full eye contact, or blessing the drivers on the road with you. <span style="font-weight: bold;">It&#8217;s not the length of time, it&#8217;s the depth.</span><br />
Anything that interrupts the habitual is necessary mischief.  It&#8217;s a way to reclaim and refocus your energy.  As the poet Hafiz says<span style="font-style: italic;">&#8220;Leave the familiar for a while&#8230;..make a new water-mark on your excitement and love.&#8221;</span><br />
